INTRALESIONAL IMMUNOTHERAPY

Viral warts are common skin lesions caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection. The superficial epidermis is infected with HPV, resulting in keratinocyte proliferation and hyperkeratosis. While benign, they may be tender and cosmetically bothersome.

Warts can be treated in many different ways, and this includes conventional therapies like topical agents, cryotherapy, electrosurgery and CO2 laser ablation. In certain cases however, warts may be recalcitrant to conventional therapies, and may benefit from intralesional injections of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (IL MMR) as an immunological modality of treatment for recalcitrant warts. IL MMR has been proven to be particularly useful for patients who are less suitable for surgery, or who have failed standard therapy.

Dr Angeline Yong is widely versed in all the conventional, and also the more novel therapeutic options, for the treatment of this common and yet potentially frustrating problem. She has unique experience in the use of all the above-mentioned modalities, and is the lead author for her group which has presented the successful results of IL MMR immunotherapy for the treatment of recalcitrant - recurrent viral warts at local conferences and at the 2019 American Academy of Dermatology and World Congress of Dermatology conferences. IL MMR injection has been shown by her group to be an effective, tolerable and safe alternative therapy where conservative treatment options for viral warts have failed. Most patients experience good improvement with minimal side effects.
