TOPICAL IMMUNOTHERAPY

Topical immunotherapy involves the application of a sensitising agent such as Diphenylcyclopropenone (DCP) to treat certain skin conditions such as alopecia areata. DCP application works in conditions like alopecia areata by redirecting the autoimmune attacks on the hair follicles, therefore allowing for re-growth.

DCP applications are carried out using different strengths after a first initial round of sensitisation. The subsequent choice of strength depends on the tolerance of the patient and the clinical response to treatment.

The procedure

DCP applications are typically applied weekly to the affected area. Patients are usually recommended to wash the DCP off after a minimum of 4-6 hours. DCP applications typically may cause the patient some itching.
