TOPICAL & ORAL MEDICATIONS

At Angeline Yong Dermatology, we have both an extensive range of topical and oral dermatological medications to cater to every individual’s needs and skin type. As a MOH-accredited dermatologist practising in Gleneagles Medical Centre in Singapore, Dr Yong is thoroughly trained in both inpatient and outpatient medical dermatology, and treats dermatological conditions across all ages ranging from infants to the elderly. She carries a full range of topical and oral medications to handle most dermatology conditions and will be able to customise a treatment plan for you based on your condition, skin type and the presence of other co-existing medical conditions should there be any.

NEW-CLASS BIOLOGICS

What are biologics? Biologics are medications made from animal or human proteins. Unlike steroids or other more traditional immunosuppressive medications, biologics are designed to specifically target certain parts of biologic pathways that cause inflammation in the skin and other organs.

Biologic medications are given as injections, and they work in different ways from traditional treatments by blocking the activation of immune cells that play a role in diseases such as psoriasis and eczema. Examples of biologic drugs to treat psoriasis include etanercept (enbrel), adalimumab (humira), infliximab (remicade), ustekinumab (stelara) and secukinumab (cosentyx). Dupilumab (dupixent), on the other hand, is the first-ever FDA-approved biologic drug for atopic dermatitis, and omalizumab (xolair) is FDA-approved to treat chronic spontaneous urticaria.

In the field of dermatology, biologics have been most often used to treat severe psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. They are relatively expensive, but there is increasing evidence of their efficacy and tolerability compared to standard systemic therapies. Biologics are usually indicated for patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for systemic therapy, and especially those who have failed standard therapy.

It is important to remember, however, that all systemic medications, whether traditional or newer biologics, have broad effects and people undergoing treatment with biologics have to be carefully monitored by their dermatologist prescribing it. At Angeline Yong Dermatology, biologic treatments are available for patients with eczema, psoriasis and chronic spontaneous urticaria. Proper assessment on suitability for this form of treatment will first be carried out before a decision is made on whether more traditional medications or biologics should be administered.
